TOP can support over four BILLION (4,000,000,000) different chat channels
at one time. A chat channel is like a frequency on a CB radio. Some chat
channels may have designated topics, be limited only to certain users, or
require an invitation.
To move about the various channels, you use the JOIN command. Type HELP
JOIN for instructions on how to use this command.
TOP features three different types of channels. The first channels,
regular channels, are identified with a number ranging from 1 to 3999999999.
You can move about most of them freely, although some of them may be restricted
to certain users. Some channels may also have fixed topics of discussion.
The broad range of numbers for regular channels is to enhance your
creativity and imagination. For example, say some users start talking about a
certain BBS. They may decide to have some fun and move to the channel with
that BBS's number, to provide some "built-in" advertising for the system.
However, you don't have to use channels creatively. If you wish to get away
from some users, you can move to any chat channel that you wish.
The second type of channel is called a Conference. Conferences are
identified with names instead of numbers. Conferences always have fixed
topics. For example, the GAMES conference would be for talking about games.
You can get a list of conferences by using the CONFLIST command. Some
conferences may be "unlisted". These will not show on this list, and you must
know the name to get in the conference. The names of unlisted conferences are
never shown to outside users, either.
The final type of channel is a personal channel. Each user inside TOP has
their own personal channel available to them. Personal channels are identified
with the name of a user. Personal channels may only be joined by invitation
only. They are most handy for private discussions.
To see which user is in which channel, use the WHO command. To toggle
whether or not the name or number of the channel you are in should be shown to
other users, use the CHANGE LISTED command, or the profile editor (PROFILE
command).
Each channel may have one or more moderators. Moderators keep the peace
and encourage conversation. You always have moderator powers in your own
personal channel, and may have moderator powers in other channels or
conferences as well. To find out more about the commands you can perform as a
moderator, type HELP MODERATOR.
All chat channels are kept fairly isolated from each other. Most commands
can only be "done to" users in the same channel as you. The conversation going
on in different channels is kept seperate. You may only be joined to one
channel at a time.
